Testing new gravitational physics by the shapes of shadows around (ultra-)compact objects

Title: Testing new gravitational physics by the shapes of shadows around (ultra-)compact objects
Abstract: With the release of the images of the centre of the galaxy M87 and of the centre of our own galaxy, both expected to be a supermassive black hole, new strategies for testing General Relativity in the strong-field regime have been open. In this talk I will discuss the simulation of the images around some (ultra)-compact objects due to the presence of light rings surrounding the central depression of optically-thin accretion disks and how the shapes of the shadows might reveal novel spacetime structures beyond the well-known Kerr family of solutions from GR. Future observations of additional light rings through very-long baseline interferometry might reveal a compelling case for extensions of General Relativity.
