Many scholars in language, communication and thought are becoming increasingly aware that there are no “different ways of saying the same thing” – at least as far as the grammatical domain is concerned – since the alleged “thing” is undetachable from the way it is linguistically constructed. As soon as the functional and cognitive principle of isomorphism is accepted, linguistic analysis finds its true raison d’être as the study of what is said with each formal configuration in interaction with many different – sometimes hardly predictable – features pertaining to various semiotic codes. The upcoming 1st International Symposium on Grammatical Variation and the Construction of Meaning (I Simposio Internacional sobre Variación Gramatical y Construcción del Significado) is aimed at becoming a forum for the discussion of cases of morphosyntactic variability in different languages and, hopefully, for the advancement towards a unified theoretical model of linguistic variation and meaning.
The Symposium is being organized by the CoSoLen research group and will be held at Universidad de La Laguna (Tenerife, Spain) on November 22 and 23, 2002. The official program and the booklet of abstracts can be downloaded here.
Another significant upcoming event that follows along similar theoretical lines is the 13th International Columbia School Conference on the Interaction of Linguistic Form and Meaning with Human Behavior, to take place at Columbia University (New York) in January 2023. Here is the link to its official website. In particular, it seems difficult to overstate the relevance of Erica C. García‘s scientific works for the development of both the Columbia School body of scholarship and the models of syntactic variation put forward by the CoSoLen group.
