My research activity began in 1989. In 1990 I obtained a grant from the “Personal Researcher Training Plan” to carry out my Doctoral Thesis, which I defended in 1994 (Extraordinary Doctorate Award from the University of Salamanca, 1995) . From September 1996 to October 2000, my teaching activity took place at the University of León, although my research activity continued to be linked to the research group at the University of Salamanca. In 2005, I did a 6-month research stay at the University of York with Professor Brendan J. Keely funded through the “Program for Internships for University Professors in Foreign Higher Education and Research Centers”
Research lines developed throughout this period include: simultaneous determinations by Flow Injection Analysis (FIA), micellar systems in separation processes, electronic olfactometry (based on gas sensors and mass spectrometry) and rapid methods based on in the coupling of gas chromatography with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). In almost all of them, the basic objective is the simplification (and even elimination) of the sample treatment steps, through the use of systems based on headspace generation (HS) and microextraction with packed sorbents (MEPS), coupled injection using a programmed temperature vaporizer (PTV). Methodologies have also been developed using derivatization processes to expand the application possibilities of gas chromatography. Therefore, various methodologies have been implemented for the analysis of different types of samples (mainly environmental and biological) and the determination of different analytes (PAH, THMs, BTEX, biomarkers …).
All the research has been carried out with funding obtained through 24 research projects (11 national, 9 regional, 4 from the University of Salamanca). The result of these investigations is translated into more than 50 publications in international journals (more than 85% in journals of the first quartile in the area of Analytical Chemistry) and in the presentation of works in about 50 national and international conferences. I have co-directed 5 Doctoral Theses (3 of them obtained the European Doctorate and 1 the International Mention). Three of the doctoral candidates obtained the Extraordinary Doctorate Award.
