Dr Lacal has a bachelor in Biology and a PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Granada. His research line has focused on genetics and molecular biology in prokaryotes and in eukaryotes. He has broad experience in genetics, microbiology, biochemistry, molecular and cellular biology, proteomics and crystallography. He has published over 30 research articles in peer-review journals indexed in the JCR and 7 book chapters in editorials such as Springer and Humana Press. He is the principal investigator of the research group Functional Genetics of Rare Diseases, focusing on the genetic and molecular characterization of mutations found in patients with rare diseases, RASopathies mainly.

Dr Lacal is an Associate Professor in Genetics. He teaches Genetics at the Faculty of Biology of the University of Salamanca and several Master courses: “Communication Strategies in Cancer Research” Master program in Cancer Biology of the Faculty of Medicine, and “Regulation of Gene Expression by Epigenetic Mechanisms” Master program in Cellular and Molecular Biology of the Faculty of Biology.

As the Academic Coordinator of International Mobility of the Faculty of Biology he is responsible for the management and learning agreements of both, the Erasmus and International Exchange programs with foreign universities. Whenever he can, he actively participates in scientific communication activities organized by the University of Salamanca.
