Dr. Lacal obtained his Bachelor of Biology in 2002 from the University of Granada and his Doctorate in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Granada in 2008. His Doctoral Thesis entitled “Biochemical and molecular characterization of the two-component system TodS/TodT of Pseudomonas putida DOT-T1E” was carried out at the Zaidín Experimental Station, joint center of the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) and the University of Granada. Thesis directors were Dr. Juan Luis Ramos Martín and Dr. Tino Krell.
His first postdoc (2008-2010) was carried out in the group of Dr. Tino Krell at the Zaidín Experimental Station. His scientific training abroad includes three months (2007) as a visiting predoctoral researcher in the group of Dr. Rebecca Parales from the Department of Microbiology at the University of California, Davis (Davis, USA), and six years as a postdoc (2010-2014) and Assistant Project Scientist (2014-2016) in the group of Dr. Richard Firtel, Department of Cell Biology and Development at the University of California, San Diego (USA). In his return to Spain, he worked as a postdoc (2016-2017) in the group of Dr. Xosé Bustelo at the Cancer Research Center of Salamanca, and continued as an Assistant Professor in Genetics in the Department of Microbiology and Genetics at the University of Salamanca.
Currently Dr. Lacal is an Associate Professor in Genetics, in the Department of Microbiology and Genetics at the University of Salamanca. He is the principal investigator of the group Functional Genetics of Rare Diseases. In his lab they work on genetic variants and molecular mechanisms that trigger rare diseases and cancer.
