Mario Cossío Olavide is a Juan de la Cierva Postdoctoral Fellow at the Universidad de Salamanca, holding a joint appointment as a researcher at the Instituto de Estudios Medievales y Renacentistas y de Humanidades Digitales (IEMYRhd) and as a faculty member at the Departamento de Literatura Española e Hispanoamericana. Since 2020 he is also a research affiliate at the Center for Premodern Studies at the University of Minnesota.
His works centers in three areas: 13th- and 14th-century Castilian prose, editing medieval texts, and the use of digital humanities for editing medieval works. Currently, he is working on vernacular encyclopedic knowledge during the age of Sancho IV (1284-1325). Having published a critical edition of don Juan Manuel’s Libro del cavallero e del escudero, his current research project involves the study and edition of Sancho IV’s Lucidario using digital humanities (the project’s advance can be tracked in his research blog).
He is also one of the editors –along with Daniela Santonocito (Università di Catania) and Anita Savo (Boston University)– of a volume dedicated to Don Juan Manuel, in Brill’s series of Companions to Medieval Literatures and Cultures (late 2024), a volume on digital humanities applied to medieval Iberian texts (early 2025, De Gruyter), co-edited with José Manuel Fradejas (Universidad de Valladolid) and Ricardo Pichel (Universidad de Salamanca), and he is the invited editor for a monographic issue of La Corónica dedicated to culture in the age of Sancho IV (early 2025).
