Difference between Wi-Fi Range Extender and Mesh Network

What is a Wi-Fi Range Extender?

A Wi-Fi range extender, also know as a Wi-Fi Booster or Wi-Fi repeater, is a device with two Wi-Fi radios that connects to a network while it rebroadcast what it receives.

What is a Wi-Fi Mesh Network?

A Wi-Fi mesh network, also know as mesh Wi-Fi system, is a set multiple identical units positioned in different locations that together create a single WiFi network.

After installing a mesh network, you may wish to turn off the WiFi from the ISP router that is enabled by default, in order to improve the performance by reducing channel utilization.

What are the differences between a Wi-Fi?

  • Reconnection: when you move a device inside an area where there is a router and a range extender, it needs to reconnect; wifi mesh network does not need to reconnect.
  • Performance: Wi-Fi mesh network performance is usually superior to range extender as it may use different channels simultaneously.
  • Price: Wi-Fi mesh networks are usually more expensive that range extender.

As a general conclusion, wi-fi mesh networks are better than range extender, but also more expensive.
