How to improve System Performance in Windows 10

This is a list of suggested actions in order to improve the performance of a computer running Windows 10.

1. Scan system for viruses

Ensure you have installed in your computer a reliable antivirus software.

Run the antivirus application and perform a full scan of your computer.

2. Scan system for malware

Run a reliable software to remove malware from a Windows 10 system.

I would recommend Malwarebytes, but there may be others available in the market.

3. Scan hard disks for errors

Run scandisk.

Remember that it may take a few hours. You may want to run it during the night.

4. Scan RAM memory for errors

Click on “Start” and type “Memory Diagnostics Tool”. Click on the icon.

Choose the option you prefer.

When computer is rebooted, the scan will start automatically.

Once Windows is restarted again, results are (theoretically) displayed.

They did not appear to me, so if it is your case click on “Start” and type “Event Manager”. Then go to “System” and look for “MemoryDiagnostic” events. The results are displayed on the details.

5. Defrag hard disks

Click on “Start” and type “defrag”. This tool aids you to defrag your hard disks.
Select all of them and wait until the process finishes.

6. Check system files

We will use Windows’ System File Checker to check files.

Boot Windows in safemode.
Run this command as an admin:
sfc /scannow

Wait until the process finishes.

7. Disable background processes

Follow the steps on this post.
