I obtained a BSc in Biology from the University of Sevilla in 2021 and a MSc in Medical Research: Clinical and Experimental from the University of Sevilla in 2022. During my MSc thesis, I joined the Physiology and Neuronal Plasticity group supervised by Dr. Esperanza R. Matarredona, where I studied the effect of two drugs on the proliferation of neural stem cells from the subventricular zone and glioma cells in vitro. In 2022, I obtained a FPU fellowship from Ministerio de Universidades, Spain, allowing me to work on my PhD. I am currently studying the effect of Cx43 based peptides on temozolomide resistant glioma cells, tumours and their tumour microenvironment.

I studied Biotechnology at the University of Oviedo (Asturias, 2017-2021). Once I finished, I moved to Salamanca to obtain a MSc in Neuroscience at the University of Salamanca. During my MSc thesis, I joined the Neurobiochemistry laboratory at the Institute of Neuroscience of Castilla y León, led by Dr. Arantxa Tabernero, where I studied the antitumor effect of a cell penetrating peptide based on the structure of connexin43 in a murine glioma stem cell line. In December of 2022, I obtained a fellowship from the Junta de Castilla y León to do the PhD in the lab, thanks to which I will continue studying the therapeutic potential of this peptide both in vitro and in vivo.

I studied Biotechnology at the University of Salamanca (2012-2016). Afterwards, I moved to The Netherlands to obtain my two-year Master’s degree in Behavioural and Cognitive Neurosciences (Research) with cum Laude qualification at the University of Groningen (2016-2018). Following, I moved to Germany to perform a short stay at the German Cancer Research Centre (Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum, DKFZ), in Heidelberg, funded by the General Foundation of the University of Salamanca (2019). Next, I obtained a Research Assistant contract funded by the Junta de Castilla y León, and I came back to Salamanca to join the Neurobiochemistry laboratory of Dr. Arantxa Tabernero at the Institute of Neuroscience of Castilla y León, University of Salamanca (2019-2021). I remained in the lab with a fellowship from the Junta de Castilla y León for doing my PhD in Neurosciences.

José M. Medina is currently an emeritus professor at the University of Salamanca.  Throughout his research career he has published around 200 articles. He was director of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Salamanca. José M. Medina’s research is focused in Neuroscience, Alzheimer’s, Astrocytes, metabolism, Glia cells and Structural Biology.

Arantxa Tabernero currently works at the Institute of Neuroscience Castilla y León (INCYL), Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Salamanca. Arantxa does research in Neuroscience, Gliomas, Astrocytes, Connexin, Glia cells and Structural Biology. Their most recent publications are related to Cell-penetrating Peptides as potential therapies against malignant brain tumors.
