 PSE: Optimal renewable based processes

……………………………………

Petrol based fuels have been used over the past 30 years in an unsustainable way. Their limited availability and the environmental concerns require from us alternative sources of energy that are renewable are environmentally friendly.
-Biofuels are a promising alternative whose production is subject to uncertainty.
-Solar or wind energy are plentiful sources.
-Waste (agricultural, CO2) and byproducts are interesting sources whose further processing allows better treatment and obtaining added value.
Mathematical optimization techniques provide a powerful tool to help design such processes and the products that allow us to reduce our current dependency on fossil fuels. Energy and water consumption are the two key points. We focus on process modelling, design and optimization.

 PSE: Formulated product design

……………………………………

Formulated products account for some of the most used consumer goods in industry. From drugs, food to perfumes and detergents there is a wide range of examples. Their performance, they way they look, the way they smell or taste, their capability to remove stains determine their price as they can satisfy specific needs of the costumers.

Mathematical optimization techniques provide a powerful tool to help design such products in a sustainable and robust way in todays world with everchanging raw material prices and rapid regularoty framework changes.

Multiphase reactor engineering

…………………………………………………………

Bubble column and Stirred tank reactors are typical contact devices for aerobic fermentation processes, waste water treatement, drug synthesis, carbon capture or Fischer-Tropsch fuels synthesis. Unveiling the mechanisms behind those processes starts at the fundamental understanding of the transport phenomena of the gas-liquid contact between the bubbles and the continuum phase. Furthermore, bubble and drop formation share a number of similitudes. Understanding the drop formation mechanisms would help design the proper particles too.
