Dossiê temático

O GÓTICO E AS MULHERES

THE GOTHIC AND WOMEN

As the genre and the fictional mode of fear and scary that rises to criticize the modernity established by Enlightenment, gothic has always been closely linked to women. Writers like Clara Reeve, Ann Radcliffe, Jane Austen, Mary Shelley, and the Brontë sisters helped the gothic to settle its up-to-date and distinctive thematic and structural conventions, making it popular in the Western imagination in its most diverse forms and manifestations. Due to its contesting and transgressive spirit, writers that are fundamental to the contemporary literature and fiction like Emily Dickinson, Kate Chopin, Virginia Woolf, Angela Carter, Clarice Lispector, and Alice Munro have employed gothic conventions, granting new and even more frightening shapes and frames to them. This Revista Itinerários thematic dossier will welcome papers that approach the many possible relations between the gothic and women in any nationalities and periods of the literary, fictional, and/or artistic history, under any theoretical and critical perspectives, and with the most varied focuses (for example, but never restricted only to these: the female gothic, the female characters in gothic literature and fiction, the relationship of the male writers with the gothic and women, the relationship of women with the gothic as literary, artistic, fiction, and culture theory and criticism, etc.).
