The Department of Gender, Women and Sexuality Studies at the University of Minnesota invites applications for the position of Professor and Chair. The Chair is the department’s chief academic, financial, and strategic officer who works to recruit, mentor, and retain outstanding faculty and students at all levels.  The preferred rank at the time of appointment is Professor; however, advanced Associate Professors with prior leadership and administrative experience will also be considered.  We are seeking candidates who are willing to serve as Chair for at least two three-year terms, then join the department’s regular tenured faculty at the conclusion of the chair appointment.

Applicants from all disciplines are invited to apply, but we are especially interested in candidates whose scholarship will complement existing departmental strengths, which include health, science, and technology studies; transnational feminisms; women of color feminisms; black studies; postcolonial studies; queer and transgender studies; and cultural studies. Candidates must possess an excellent record of research as well as demonstrable commitments to engaging in national leadership in the field of women, gender, and sexuality studies; addressing structural inequalities within and outside of the academy; and cultivating an interdisciplinary core curriculum. We have a strong preference for candidates with experience mentoring junior faculty through tenure and with experience in budgeting and finance in higher education. The University of Minnesota is home to a number of vibrant interdisciplinary programs and initiatives that focus on critical exploration of race, indigeneity, gender, and sexuality studies from a variety of perspectives—locally regionally, and transnationally. These include Race, Indigeneity, Gender and Sexuality Studies Initiative (RIGS), the Interdisciplinary Center for the Study of Global Change (ICGC), the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS), the African Studies Initiative (ASI), the Institute for Global Studies (IGS), and the Centre for Bioethics. The successful candidate for this position is expected to be a thought leader in the field of gender, women and sexuality studies; advance new conversations with related programs and initiatives; represent the department within the university; and promote its intellectual, pedagogical, and outreach mission beyond our campus.

The Department of Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies (GWSS) founded the first Women’s Studies major in the United States in 1973. GWSS promotes feminist scholarship, teaching, and programming that centers the relationship of knowledge, power, and social justice. We currently have 11 core faculty and more than 80 affiliate faculty. GWSS offers an undergraduate major and minor, a minor in GLBT Studies, and a Ph.D. and graduate minor in Feminist Studies. The department has a longstanding commitment to restructuring institutional relationships between the University of Minnesota and local communities to address structural inequalities through praxis and community engagement. Our faculty demonstrate a capacity to work within a wide range of feminist philosophies and methodologies, across disciplines and departments, and among multiple modes of interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research.

The position will remain open until filled, but the preferred deadline for candidate materials is December 1, 2016. Applications must be submitted online through the University’s employment system (Job ID #303941). Please visit http://cla.umn.edu/about/faculty-employment for more detail and to apply.
